Gudmund Krogsrud? He sounds like a member of ABBA or something, doesn't he. That's a great piece of writing (nothing beats real life) and could easily be your second full blog post Fran. Good work.

I dont know whether I'm turnin' into Victor Meldrew in my dotage, but when it comes to trying to get info from 'The Base' I can honestly say "I don't believe it". I phoned them today and I spoke to the receptionist. I asked about what courses they offer in music training . . . " in what?" sez she, .."in music training, I said, for my 16yr old son, music courses as advertised on your website?"
"What website?" sez she! Then she sez, we have guitar lessons on Saturday mornings for the 'little ones' ! "My son is a 16yr old" I said.
"Eh, Hold on a minute - I'll ask me friend"

In the background I hear her 'friend' saying. Just get his number and tell him we'll call him back if we get enough interested people!

When the first girl comes back and the phone to me, she begins to attempt to fob me off. When I decide to interupt her by asking about their New Media training, she she begins to struggle! She did'nt know what New Media was. Then I asked her about the possibility of my 16yr old son calling in to use the satge area or rehearsal space for band practice? Sez she, " Yeah he can book a room to hire out"! I said "He's sixteen, he's a student, with no dough!"
"Oh then No" we probably could'nt do that.
I said "O.K. then, what do you do for young people during the day?"
Well, sez she, we have computers and pool". "A pool?" I said. "No" sez she,
"Pool tables" sez she! "Right" sez me, "and what time can my teenage lad call in to discuss his needs" Between 8 pm and 10pm on Thursdays" "What do the teenagers do on then?" sez me. Sez she "Play on the computers and pool tables!"
- and she added with enthusiasm, "Oh and there'll be youth workers there too!"

I asked her nicely if there might be a manager about for me to have a chat with?
"No" sez she but I'll get Gudmund Krogsrud to call you"

And then we bid each other fairwell.

I went back onto a stagnant "The Base" website to find out what role Gudmund holds and I can reveal that he is the 'Arts Music & New Media Co-ordinator'
So, I shall look forward to his call!

If you, the reader is still with me at this point I want to thank you for staying with it! But seriously though, I am sure that 'The Base' is a very good place to go to if your a toddler, or if your a 'younger' variety of child. However, in these hard times which we are living in, I think it's just not good enough for a communinity centre for young people not to have an up-to-date website, and well informed staff! I'll keep this Blog informed, going forward.

Yeah, the base website has 'improved' would you believe Fran, used to be in a rock band when I was young myself. The nostalgia is getting to me, I hope your Son finds what he's looking for.

Hi Darren,
Thanks for your reply. I'll pass the info on to my lad and perhaps he and your brother can exchange moby numbers and make an arrangement to meet up for a chat? I'll email you with my mobile no. I dont know what or where the BLCO is, but that sounds like agood idea. By the way, we live on Muskerry Rd.

"I’ve been to The Base website but I was’nt impressed!" I must agree with you there, they don't update their website at all.

I have a younger Brother who is 16 in March that would be interested in joining a band, if your son is still looking. He's play Guitar/Bass/Drums.

The Base are supposed to have sound proof rooms for bands to practice, but from what I hear it's just being used for guitar lessons and drum lessons.

Try the BLCO, I used to practice there a few years ago with my old band. Up stairs were the bar is they have a stage. The bar is only ever open just for small functions only and that ain't to often.

Thanx for the suggestion Philip!
I've been to The Base website but I was'nt impressed! It's only my opinion of course, but I found it lacked real information! Perhaps I should pop 'round and have a butcher's! But that kinda defeats the purpose of having a website eh?
Fran (aka Is Mise).

Hi Ismise,
Perhaps your son could recruit from aficionados from the Base in Ballyfermot. The Music section is here http://www.thebase.ie/getinvolved/training.htm
from the website http://www.thebase.ie/
